This beautiful and colorful sofa blanket was inspired by the colorful Kente fabric that originated in western Ghana in the 11th century. Kente comes from the word “kenten,” which means “basket” in the Akan dialect Asante. The fabric itself is very special as it was originally the royal cloth of kings, only worn in times of extreme importance. Today, Kente cloth is widely used, although it remains highly valued. The different patterns of the fabric carry certain non-verbal messages, such as Mako Maso Adeae (my heart's desire), which means "I love you" when the fabric is placed at a lady's front door. Due to the importance of the symbolism of the fabric, Kente scarves are used by African American college graduates as a symbol of ethnic pride.
