This striped blanket is very special because it is inspired by the bright striped fabric worn by the women of the Venda people, the smallest of the South African cultural groups. The patterns are instantly recognizable around the world and play an important role in the identity of this living people. The fabric is masterfully embroidered to create the beautiful patterns and symbols that give meaning to each garment, e.g. B. the marital status of the woman. Historically, the Venda and their trading center Mapungubwe mined copper, iron and gold. They spun cotton, made glass and ceramics, and had a sophisticated knowledge of the stars, with astronomy playing an important role not only in their tradition and culture, but also in their daily lives.
