This beautiful and colorful throw was inspired by the colorful Kente cloth, which originated in the 11th century in West Ghana. Kente comes from the word “kenten,” which means “basket” in the Akan dialect Asante. The fabric itself is something very special, as it was originally the royal cloth of kings, worn only in times of utmost importance. Today, Kente cloth is widespread, although it is still highly valued. The various patterns of the fabric carry certain nonverbal messages, such as Mako Maso Adeae (my heart’s desire), which means “I love you” when the fabric is placed at a lady’s front door. Due to the significance of the symbolism of the fabric, Kente scarves are used by African American college graduates as a symbol of ethnic pride.
