This striped blanket is very special because it is inspired by the brightly striped fabric worn by the women of the Venda people, the smallest of South Africa’s cultural groups. The patterns are instantly recognizable around the world and play an important role in the identity of this vibrant people. The fabric is masterfully embroidered to create the beautiful patterns and symbols that give meaning to each garment, such as the woman’s marital status. Historically, the Venda and their trading center of Mapungubwe mined copper, iron and gold. They spun cotton, made glass and pottery, and had a sophisticated knowledge of the stars, with astronomy playing an important role not only in their tradition and culture, but also in their daily lives.
