The colorful and vibrant fabrics used in traditional Ankar wax prints inspired this beautifully crafted blanket. These prints, which are commonly used for clothing, especially in West Africa, are also a form of nonverbal communication between African women. There are many theories about how the African wax prints came to the region, but most suspect that they came from Dutch traders who wanted to imitate the Indonesian Java wax batik technique. In West Africa, patterns have evolved in ways that represent Africa as a whole. The process of making Ankara wax patterns is a highly respected craft and a labor-intensive art form. Some of the wax prints are often symbolic and named after personalities, cities, buildings, sayings or occasions.
